Re: Microsoft Debate
First topic message reminder :
If anyone is wondering, Windows 8 was originally intended for mobile devices but Microsoft had to develop the 8.1 patch because many people still use a desktop computer rather than a mobile device. Unfortunately there's going to be a time when support for win7 (which is what I'm using at present) will end, but I'm hoping that this doesn't happen anytime soon.

I think you are missing precisely our point, a PC ONLY runs on WINDOWS. A mac is by default run by an apple software (not geared for Windows or it would come standard on it), it can be loaded with windows IF THE USER CHOOSES, but it does not come with it. A PC comes standard with Windows and can only run on Windows. That is the difference.

A Mac is still a pc, because it's the only way it can run windows, they are geared exactly the same

Re: Microsoft Debate
But it does not come with it BUILT in... a PC comes with Windows (and windows ONLY) built in and pre loaded at purchase.

it is a pc, it's the only way a Mac can run windows, but granted, the user has to install windows on it themselves most of the time.

Not just install it, buy it as well. It is not a PC for this reason, a PC comes with standard windows Built in at purchase.

Nope, not true.
Re: Microsoft Debate
may have the apple brand, but it's a PC if it can run windows, and you can buy a mac with windows installed, but it's pretty rare to find

Only if it is used, all Mac's that are new are pre-installed with Apple's operating system.
I think you are also missing what I am saying:
PC: A computer that is manufactured by a 3rd party company (not the same one every time) that is pre-installed with windows and can ONLY operate on windows. More often then not cheaply built, constantly prone to virus's as well other hardware and software crashes and problems.
MAC: A computer that is manufactured and distributed SOLELY by Apple, it comes pre-installed with the latest Apple operating system, it is capable of using any operating system including Windows and Linux but it must be installed and bought the consumer seperately and manually. A MAC has better hardware then PC's and a longer life cycle PER computer. A MAC is less prone to virus's due to the updates Apple sends out and offers are more frequent then Windows and Microsoft.
Re: Microsoft Debate
there is a virus out for mac, but as it is a PC world it is only one, but things can change quite fast in a few years, and people may think a mac and a PC are different, but that's just branding. because a MAc and a PC are geared exactly the same performance wise

Yeah but chance of your [Mac] computer getting hit by the 1 virus is very small and far between. Maybe software wise a Mac is geared the same, but not Hardware wise, because a Mac is built to last (every single one) for 10 years or so at least. The desktop PCs' and Desktop MACs' last just as long as one another, but a Mac laptop (mac book) is almost gaurnteed to last you 10 years and is predictable, it is a well built machine and it is built the same way as its brothers and cousins. A pc is unpredictable, built differently because they are built by 3rd party companies and 80x more likely to get a virus and/or crash within 2-6 years (that's even a bit of a stretch but from my personal experience it is a safe number).

but it proves the point that even a mac is no longer immune from viruses

Re: Microsoft Debate
I never said it was a immune or perfect, I said that you have a much better chance of never getting a virus with a Mac the a PC. A PC your pretty much gaurnteed to get at least 1 virus while you own it.
Re: Microsoft Debate
not with a super antivirus program no virus ever gets through when you run a top of the line antivirus program, every computer, PC or mac should have an Antivirus program.

Re: Microsoft Debate
Well even with those, your computer can still get it and does, your anti-virus program can simply detect it and nuteralize or disable the virus before it harms your computer (kind of like our human immune system) but a big enough virus or multiple big virus's can overwhelm the anti virus program and harm your computer.
A MAC computer you do not need to buy a seperate anti-virus program every year, as Apple updates their software and stuff constantly, throwing hackers off their trail and further confusing them, windows and microsoft does not do these updates enough therefore you must purchase a seperate (often pricey) anti-virus program to make up for this and protect your system.

Of course not... I was just saying it is not a neccesity like it is with a PC.

Well you have are pretty safe already, see the difference between a PC and Mac is that Apple updates their software and software security so you do not HAVE to buy separate one.

still worth it to buy some antivirus software, no computer system is ever secure without antivirus software

I agree. Now that we have cleared up what the differences are, I will say that a Windows PC is not a bad thing, it depends on what you are willing to afford. Just know that a MAC is not an over priced computer just based on Apple's brand, it really does live up to being a 900-3000 dollar computer. Just due to the fact that virus and software protection and updates are very constant and the hardware is built to last. It is just a matter of how much your willing to pay and spend. In technology you generally get what you pay for.
Re: Microsoft Debate
still worth installing anti-virus onto a mac, a virus can do terrible damage to a computer no matter if it's a PC or a mac
