I believe she uses her phone to view the website, the mobile verision of the website is pretty stripped down and basic, the site looks very different if you view that way. There should still be a 'new topic' button on there still though.

Yes you can! It has a mobile version, it looks very different and it is very basic and stripped down. 
But yes you can view the forum from your phone.

only works with a WiFi connection , which does not work with my iphone

It is assumed that your mobile device would be connected to wifi or some other means of accessing he internet, or else you will not be viewing ANY website

Not nowadays, now phones have 3G and 4G which provides direct internet access through the cell tower, the cell phone companies charge plans called 'data' for these. This is more commonly used on cell phones today to get on the web.

There is an upside to it though, you can access the web anywhere without a router. I would take it actually. For when the wifi here craps out, just flip the data switch on the phone.
